Why Head Coverings?

1 Corinthians 11:3-16 For many Christian women wearing a head covering for church gatherings is no longer culturally acceptable, but it remains a biblical conviction. Scripture calls us to something more than style, it calls us to obedience. Covering our heads is a simple act and we are given reasons why we are asked to do this. Three reasons are:

1) God given authority and creation order (1 Corinthians 11:3, 8-10)

2) God’s glory uncovered, ours covered (1 Corinthians 11:4,7)

3) Because of the angels (1 Corinthians 11:10) ‘

We have confused the issue immensely by saying:

1) it is to show submission to our husbands (therefore it only applies to married women).

2) it was only cultural (but a study of the culture does not support this. It was actually counterculture for Jewish men to uncover their head in worship).

3) it is only mentioned once, so not important. (Adam and Eve were only told once not to eat from the tree in Eden). Faithfulness to God is not to be measured by culture, repetition or popularity but by simple obedience.
